Meet the Instructors
Janice M. Johnson, CSCSA
President and Owner, Forensic Pieces
Janice Johnson is retired from the State of Florida with over forty years in law enforcement. She began her career with the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Washington, D.C. as a fingerprint examiner. After ten years with the F.B.I., Jan decided to do something more exciting and crime scene analysis was the answer. She is certified by the International Association for Identification as a Certified Senior Crime Scene Analyst and was a Senior Crime Laboratory Analyst for the Florida Department of Law Enforcement in Pensacola, until June of 2001 serving over twenty-two years. Her duties consisted of both laboratory analysis and on scene processing and examinations which included: detection, collection, and preservation of physical evidence, bloodstain pattern interpretation, trajectory analysis, buried bodies and skeletal remains recovery, clandestine laboratories, and numerous homicide crime scenes to include quadruple murders. She has testified in hundreds of criminal cases in bloodstain pattern interpretation and crime scene reconstruction and analysis. For the last three years prior to her retirement in 2004, Jan was employed by the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office where she was the supervisor of the Crime Scene and Latent Print units as well as in charge of the new laboratory in which she designed. She is past Chairman of the Board of Directors and President of the International Association of Identification. Jan is also involved with the Florida Division of IAI and was the President in 2007. She was also on the original Crime Scene Certification Board for the IAI and has served on numerous committees with both the IAI and the FDIAI. Jan has taught numerous courses in the areas of both Crime Scene and Bloodstain Pattern Interpretation in the United States and abroad to include South Africa, Brazil, Bermuda, El Salvador, and Costa Rica.
Owen McDonnell, MFSA, CSCSA, CLPE, CTPE

Owen McDonnell serves as Lieutenant and supervisor of the Caddo Sheriff's Office Crime Scene Investigations Division in Shreveport, LA and has over twenty-five years in the field of Crime Scene Investigations and Latent Print Examinations. He holds an A.S. in Law Enforcement Technology from Bossier Parish Community College, a B.S. in Business Administration, and a Master in Forensic Science Administration from Oklahoma State University and is a member of the LA Division, MS Division and FL Divisions of IAI. McDonnell has provided training in basic crime scene, advanced crime scene and fingerprint development and comparison techniques to numerous law enforcement agencies in Louisiana and other states as well as conducting workshops at IAI and Division Conferences. His expertise in crime scene investigation has resulted in him being invited to lecture at several colleges and universities in his state. He is the past president of the Louisiana Division of the International Association for Identification and currently serves as their Regional Representative and as Chairman of their Latent Print Certification Committee. He has obtained IAI certification as a Senior Crime Scene Analyst, Ten Print Fingerprint Examiner and Latent Print Examiner and is currently a member of the Crime Scene Sub-committee of the International Association for Identification.
Dwane Hilderbrand, M.Ed., CFWE, CLPE

Dwane Hilderbrand began his distinguished criminal justice career in 1975 with his employment in the Identification Division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, located in Washington, D.C. In 1978 he accepted a position as Identification Technician with the Prince William County Police Department in Woodbridge, Virginia, where he was employed until 1981, when he was offered a forensic identification and crime scene position with the Scottsdale, Arizona Police Department. Dwane dedicated the remainder of his government career to the development of his advanced technical analytical and testimonial skills and retired in October of 2005 with twenty-four years of service to the citizens of Scottsdale, Arizona as a Criminalist III. Subsequent to Dwane’s studies in Police and Forensic Science, he earned a Bachelors Degree in Management from the University of Phoenix followed by a Master’s Degree in Education from Northern Arizona University. He is one of the very few forensic professionals in the world who has earned professional certifications from the International Association for Identification as a “Certified Latent Print Examiner” and “Certified Footwear Examiner”.Dwane has been invited to speak on a wide variety of forensic related topics at professional conferences across the United States and abroad. His famous “involve them and they will learn” teaching style has made him one of the most sought after instructors in the criminal justice profession. Dwane’s training courses are educational and enjoyable. He has done extensive research on the topics that he instructs, and has developed a methodology of teaching criminal justice professionals from all aspects of law enforcement. Dwane also has written and published, “Footwear, The Missed Evidence-A field guide to the collection and preservation of footwear evidence”. He understands the needs of crime scene investigators and laboratory examiners, and is able to assist them in reaching a common goal. Dwane is able to supply the student with the necessary information in such a way that it is not only understandable but also enjoyable. Dwane is an active life member and past Board of Director with the IAI.
These advanced instructional skills are the reason that Dwane Hilderbrand has been personally selected by Forensic Pieces to be one of the primary instructors.
Dawn Watkins, M.S., CSCSA, CFPH, CLPE, CEP

Ms. Watkins holds a Master’s degree in Criminal Justice, and is a Certified Latent Print Examiner, Certified Forensic Photographer and a Certified Senior Crime Scene Analyst with the IAI. Ms. Watkins is on the Crime Scene Investigation IAI Standing Committee and Recipient of the Good of the Association Award. She has been in the field of Forensics for 40 years, formally with the Federal Bureau of Investigations, Washington DC. She is currently the Senior Latent Print Examiner/Crime Scene Investigator with the Palm Beach Gardens Police Department in Florida. Ms. Watkins serves on the Educational Board of the Gold Coast Forensic Association and is an instructor for IPTM-University of North Florida, Orlando & The Taylor Group teaching Advanced Latent Fingerprints. Dawn has been a lecturer at the IAI Training Conferences since 1996.
King C. Brown, M.S., CSCSA, CFPH, CLPE, CEP

Mr. Brown holds a Master’s degree in Criminal Justice, and is an IAI Certified Senior Crime Scene Analyst, Certified Forensic Photographer & Certified Latent Print Examiner. He is the Crime Scene Supervisor for the West Palm Beach (Florida) Police Department, Past President of the Florida Division of the IAI, Chairman of the Crime Scene Certification Board for the State of Florida, Crime Scene Investigation Chair for the IAI Standing Committee, Recipient of the Good of the Association Award and has been in the field of Forensic Science for 28 years. Mr. Brown is the President of the Gold Coast Forensic Association and is an Adjunct Professor at Eastern Florida State College in the Crime Scene Technology Associates Degree Program, IPTM-University of North Florida, Orlando and an instructor for The Taylor Group teaching Crime Scene Photography, Basic & Advanced Crime Scene Search & Recovery and Advanced Latent Fingerprints. King has also been a lecturer at the IAI Training Conferences since 1996.
Chris Duncan, M.A., CFPH, CSCSA, CBPA

Chris Duncan began his law enforcement career in 1987 with the Alexandria (VA) Sheriff’s Office and has been with the Houston (TX) Police Department since 1992. Chris became a crime scene investigator in 1997 and has never looked back. He has a B.A. in History from George Mason University and a M.A. in Criminology from the University of Houston. He is certified by the IAI as a Forensic Photographer, Bloodstain Pattern Analyst, and as a Senior Crime Scene Analyst. Chris currently serves on the JFI’s Editorial Review Committee and the Bloodstain Pattern Analysis S&P Committee. He is the author of numerous forensic journal articles and Advanced Crime Scene Photography, (Second Edition). In addition to his duties as a crime scene investigator, he is also an instructor at the Houston Police Academy and teaches with the Texas Engineering Extension Service through Texas A&M University.
Dr. Jason Byrd, Ph.D., ABFE

Dr. Byrd is an Associate Professor and Associate Director of the William R. Maples Center for Forensic Medicine at the University of Florida’s College of Medicine; there he instructs courses in forensic science at the nationally recognized Hume Honors Program. He is a Board Certified Forensic Entomologist and Diplomate of the American Board of Forensic Entomology. He was twice elected President of the American Board of Forensic Entomology, and is both a Past-President and current President-Elect of the North American Forensic Entomology Association. He served for over a decade as a faculty member of the Virginia Institute of Forensic Science and Medicine. He now serves as the Executive Manager for the International Veterinary Forensic Sciences Association and serves as the Director of Education for the ASPCA Veterinary Forensic Sciences Program. Outside of academics Dr. Byrd serves as a Medicolegal Death Investigator within the National Disaster Medical System, Disaster Mortuary Operational Response Team, Region IV. He also serves as the Commander for the Florida Emergency Mortuary Operations Response System and as a subject editor for the Journal of Medical Entomology, and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences. He has published numerous scientific articles and combined his formal academic training in Entomology and Forensic Science to serve as a consultant and educator in both criminal and civil investigations at home and abroad. Dr. Byrd specializes in the education of law enforcement officials, medical examiners, coroners, attorneys, and other death investigators on the use and applicability of arthropods in legal investigations, and has over 15 years of experience in the collection and analysis of entomological evidence.
Jeff Goudeau, M.S., CSCSA

Jeff Goudeau is currently the Crime Scene and Firearms Supervisor for the Louisiana State Police Crime Laboratory. He is a Certified Senior Crime Scene Analyst, holds a Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice and a Bachelor’s Degree in Clinical Laboratory Science. He is the past President of the Louisiana Association of Forensic Science (LAFS). Jeff also serves on the Ethics Committee and is the Chairman for the 2016 training seminar for the Association of Firearm and Toolmark Examiners (AFTE). He is a member of the Association of Crime Scene Reconstruction (ACSR) and the International Association of Bloodstain Pattern Analysis (IABPA). He is currently an instructor for the National Firearms Examiner Academy and a former professor at Baton Rouge Community College and Our Lady of Lake College. Jeff has also been an instructor for numerous crime scene courses over the span of his career. He is also a routine guest speaker for several colleges and professional organizations. Jeff has published papers in Firearms Examination and Shooting Reconstruction. Jeff also serves as the Region 14 representative for the National Integrated Ballistics Information Network. He’s been qualified as an expert witness approximately 50 times in various fields including Firearms Examination, Crime Scene Investigation, and Shooting Reconstruction.
Robert Wyman

Robert Wyman formerly served as a Traffic Analyst, Traffic Engineer, and Emergency Management coordinator for the Miami-Dade County government. This prepared him for his next role in a civilian position as Special Events Coordinator for the City of Miami Police Department and allowed him to start a full-time private practice in 1988. Later, Wyman continued education in the fields of Traffic Crash Reconstruction, Forensic Science, and Digital Photography. Robert is now the President of Wyman Enterprises, Inc., which provides Forensic Photography and Evidence Documentation services for both civil and criminal cases. Mr. Wyman has also been accepted as an Expert Witness in Federal, State, and local courts. Much of his work in Traffic Crash Reconstruction and Evidence Documentation has been published in multiple books, articles, magazines, and industry newsletters. He also is a frequent guest speaker at conventions, seminars, and local association meetings for Private Investigators, Paralegals, Attorneys, Traffic Crash Reconstructionists, and Crime Scene Investigators. Wyman’s latest advancements are in the emerging integrations of GPS Forensics and the integration of Smartphone “Apps” with the forensic and investigative workflow.
Bruce Willis, B.S., M.S.

Bruce Willis is a retired Instructor formerly employed by the Georgia Public Safety Training Center in Forsyth, Georgia (August 15, 2015). He holds a B.S degree in Criminal Justice from Valdosta State College, a M.S. in Public Administration from Columbus State University and an Ed. S. from Valdosta State University in Curriculum and Instruction. While initially employed by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, He completed his law enforcement career with the State of Georgia's Training Academy as the Forensic Instructor. Mr. Willis has consulted or examined in excess of 500 death scenes and testified as an expert in the following; Interviews and Interrogations, Bloodstain Pattern Analysis, Blood Detection at Crime Scenes, Forensic Photography, Basic Crime Scene Photography, Crime Scene Reconstruction, Ballistic Reconstruction, as well as fingerprint/palm development techniques, fingerprint classification, and fingerprint/palm print comparison, arson and post-blast Investigations. Mr. Willis is a POST certified instructor in these fields. He is an instructor of child death investigations, recovery of skeletal remains, and post mortem interval. Mr. Willis currently holds a State of Georgia Teaching Certificate in various fields to include Mathematics and Science. He is a POST Certified Identification Technician, Arson /Post-Blast Investigator, and POST certified Instructor. Mr. Willis is dedicated to Instruction and furtherance of forensic understanding in our law enforcement and legal community. He is an NFA Graduate and Dr. William Bass award winner.

Kathleen Bright-Birnbaum, CLPE

Kathleen Bright-Birnbaum retired from the Pima County Sheriff’s Department in Arizona, with over thirty six years of service. Over those years she served as a Latent Print Examiner, Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) site manager, forensic artist and crime scene technician. Kathleen has been an IAI Certified Latent Print Examiner since 1995 and has served on the Editorial Review Board of the IAI’s Journal of Forensic Identification since 2001. She has been published in magazines such as the Journal of Forensic Identification, Servamus Security Magazine and The Champion. Since leaving the sheriff’s department, Kathleen has continued to serve the criminal justice community through her company, Desert Forensics. Based in Tucson, Arizona, Desert Forensics provides independent forensic consulting services to attorneys throughout the US and Canada. Kathleen began teaching fingerprint identification classes to law enforcement personnel while at the Pima County Sheriff’s Department and now provides advanced and expert level classes to forensic personnel throughout the US. Kathleen has also traveled extensively to South Africa to provide fingerprint identification classes to the South African Police Service and to speak at forensic educational conferences.
Sergeant Thomas Anthony Dissis, CCSA

Sergeant Thomas Anthony Dissis has been a sworn law enforcement member of the Indian River County Sheriff's Office since 1992. The majority of his career time spent has been spent in the Criminal Investigations Division including Undercover Narcotics, Crimes Against Persons - rape/homicide and Crime Scene Investigations. Anthony Dissis is a court qualified expert in several areas of crime scene investigations. Anthony is currently assigned to the Law Enforcement Division serving as a shift supervisor. He has earned a Masters Degree in Accountancy with a concentration in forensic accounting. He is an International Association for Identification Certified Crime Scene Analyst.
Investigator Dave Doglietto, CSCSA

Investigator Dave Doglietto, CSCSA, retired from the California Department of Corrections & Rehabilitation after 29 years of service. He was assigned as the senior criminal investigator at the Correctional Training Facility, Soledad State Prison, for 18 years. Previous to that, he was a housing unit officer with 312 medium-maximum security inmates under his supervision. Investigator Doglietto’s primary responsibilities with the prison were as a narcotics investigator, homicide and major crimes investigator, fingerprint development and comparison analyst, handwriting analyst, crime scene analyst, and bloodstain pattern analyst. He also operated a mini-forensic laboratory at the prison. Currently he is an investigator/forensic specialist with a south-Monterey County police department, and provides crime scene processing and analysis for two other neighboring police departments through mutual aid. He is a Certified Senior Crime Scene Analyst through the International Association for Identification, with over 2,000 hours of formal training. He is an adjunct instructor at Hartnell College in Salinas, California, where he teaches criminal investigations, administration of justice, and a forensic science class he developed for the college. He is a California POST certified academy instructor, and has developed and taught POST certified classes on the subjects of drug abuse recognition, standardized field sobriety testing and crime scene investigations for the patrol officer. He has an M.S. degree in Organizational Leadership, and a B.S. degree in Criminal Justice Management.
Detective Sergeant Kyle King, CSCSA, CFPH

Detective Sergeant Kyle King has been a sworn Law Enforcement member of the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office since 1989. He serves in the Criminal Investigations Section, where he manages all forensic operations for the agency as the Crime Scene Unit Supervisor. He has a B.A. in Management from Warner Southern College. He is an International Association for Identification Certified Senior Crime Scene Analyst and is a Certified Forensic Photographer. He teaches a broad range of courses in forensics and criminal investigation to students from around the world.
